This year's Met Gala theme was Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology. The theme was announced last year in Vogue where they stated that the exhibition would focus on “the dichotomy between handmade haute couture and machine-made fashion.” As high fashion houses have begun to explore the possibilities that technologies like 3d printing can provide, the two have begun to coalesce in new and interesting ways. In response to this year's theme, many of the attendees simply went for the "silver is futuristic!" trope.
However, there were a few celebrities who stood out from the crowd for their interpretation of the theme, and here's out pick of the best:
Claire Danes: Claire Danes' Cinderella-style Zac Posen gown was a fantastic interpretation of the theme. We love the way it combines the glamour & sophistication of formal fashion with technology in a beautiful way. The lights don't feel like an irrelevant add-on, but add magnificently to the dress and it looks complete when lit up in the darkness.
UN Women's Ambassador Emma Watson wore a gown by Calvin Klein in collaboration with Eco Age, which was made entirely from recycled plastic bottles. Going green is a fantastic interpretation of the fashion & technology theme. It really highlights the question of what role technology can play in fashion and what role fashion will play in the age of technology. If we can develop more beautiful and comfortable clothes like these from recycled materials, then this is a very possible & sustainable future.
Karoline Kurkova opted for a truly interactive dress which responded to the emotions of her twitter followers. Designed by IBM Watson, the dress has 150 LED lights sewn into it, which reacted to her twitter followers' comments and likes in real-time. She took to twitter herself to ask her fans to interact with her dress throughout the evening.
Zayn Malik looked rather odd in his pseudo-medieval getup by Versace, but you have to give him props for effort. In a sea of plain-old tuxedos, this was an interesting interpretation of the theme. When plate armour was developed and replaced the much heavier chainmail, it was a huge technological advancement of it's time. This throwback to a fashion which seems archaic to us now, was actually at one time revolutionary and we think it's a pretty cool outfit for an event where the theme is fashion in an age of technology.
